Non alcoholic hot buttered rum

Delicious and alcohol-free hot buttered rum recipe idea: a twist on a classic winter warmer with all the comfort and none of the alcohol.

Hot buttered rum is a delicious, warming Christmas cocktail we love here at Mama Loves a Drink.

We are fond of its spicey, seasonal flavour, it’s comforting serving temperature, and we also love that you can easily adjust its alcohol content by simply adding more or less hot water to your glass.

However, sometimes adding water is not enough. If you need to avoid alcohol entirely, diluted rum won’t cut it: you need a different recipe entirely!

Replicating the kick of alcohol in a non-alcoholic concoction is not easy. However, we are pleased to say we have discovered a way to make alcohol-free hot buttered rum we enjoy!

Today, we share it with you. We hope you like it and it helps you build your repertoire of Christmas mocktails!

For the batter:

Place your butter cubes, spices, demerara sugar, and vanilla extract in your mug (or separate muddling bowl if you intend on serving in a glass). Use your muddler to combine them into a paste.

For the drink:

Once the batter is done, move it into your serving glass, and add your pineapple juice and hot water.

Stir until the batter melts and your drink acquires a consistent color and texture.

Finish with a dollop of whipped cream, a sprinkle of cinnamon, and a cinnamon stick for garnish for an extra indulgent and festive drink idea!

How to make alcohol-free hot buttered rum batter for a crowd

One of the many things we love about this drink is that it is easy to make it for a crowd without having to step away from your guest for long.

You can make your batter in advance, keep it in the fridge for up to a week, and assemble it as needed!

There are two ways to store the batter (fun fact: we use both here at Mama Loves a Drink, each mama having her favourite!):

  • Place the batter in a suitable jar with a lid you can seal and keep in the fridge, and spoon out when needed.
  • Place your batter onto greaseproof paper, roll it into a log, and slice up as needed.

For doses, you can use the single-serve recipe above and multiply it out for the number of guests.
